News Details (Posted: March 5, 2008):

Wilton Manors Historical Society

Full Description:

The Wilton Manors Historical Society was re-instituted in 2002 to:

* Collect, preserve, and interpret Wilton Manors history, and promote public awareness and appreciation for the rich past of the City.
* Foster appreciation and interest in those special individuals, events, artifacts, and structures that have impacted the history and development of Wilton Manors and whose significance should be remembered and preserved.
* Undertake historical educational programs and exhibits on the Island City through a variety of public media and forums.

The Historical Society has a special focus on the "Richardson Property," a historical site acquired by the City of Wilton Manors with Broward County and the State of Florida as part of of its parks portfolio. The Richardson Property includes two buildings of historical significance, and it is the site of Broward County's third golf course, built in 1936. The park, when finished, will have access to the South Middle River, and provide a venue for City endorsed outside events.

We share an office with the Wilton Manors Main Street organization at the east end of the Wilton Manors City Hall. Office hours are sporadic.

Monthly meetings are held the third Thursday of the month at 7:00 pm, generally in the City Commision of City Hall.

The Historical Society is always interested in photographs of Wilton Manors, stories about "the old days," and any other information or materials relating to the history of Wilton Manors.

Historical Society Vice President Cynthia Thuma has published Images of America: Wilton Manors, copyright 2005, published by Arcadia Publishing, which is a pictorial history of Wilton Manors. It is available for purchase at various locations in Broward County. It may be obtained at the Wilton Manors Library for a $20 donation to the Wilton Manors Historical Society.

The Society is registered as a nonprofit corporation in the State of Florida. It is governed by a seven member Board of Directors, including four officers. Annual corporate meetings are held in January of each year.
